To celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we’re excited to share a new video about our Sport For Peace Programmes in Sri Lanka, which work in communities to help them heal and form a deeper understanding and acceptance of one another despite ethnic and religious differences.

On May 18, 2009, after 30 years of ethnically-charged violence, aggression, and conflict, Sri Lanka’s civil war came to an end. The Sri Lankan people will be quick to remind us, however, that this does not mean they have found peace.

It has been almost 2 years since Generations For Peace implemented Sport For Peace Programmes in northern Sri Lanka. Through sport-based activities targeting youth, GFP brings together people from neighbourhoods and communities that might not otherwise interact, even nine years after the war that once divided them has come to an end.

Now, these communities see friendships formed between different and formerly opposing ethnicities and religions, allowing Sri Lankans to witness and promote even more progress toward lasting and sustainable peace in their neighbourhoods, communities, and country.
